The goal of a new study published in BMC Research Notes was to detect rectal and vaginal colonization rates and the antibiotic susceptibility profile of Group B Streptococcus (GBS) or Streptococcus agalactiae in pregnant women. This was a cross-sectional study spanning 6 months, which analyzed vaginal and anorectal samples obtained from 100 pregnant women. All strains isolated were used for susceptibility test to various antibiotics. The detected colonization rate of GBS strains was 14%. These strains did not display resistance to ampicillin, oxacillin, amoxycillin-clavulanate, cefotaxime, pristinamycin, vancomycin and clindamycin. Meanwhile, sensitivity to gentamycin, erythromycin and cefoxitin were elicited by 12%, 94%, and 82% of the strains, respectively. The findings indicated that at least one out of every ten women is GBS colonized and its strains exhibit uniform sensitivity to beta lactamines. However, GBS strains have decreased sensitivity to erythromycin.
